How to Design a Luxury Wine Cellar: Choosing the Right Modular Wine Column
Discover how custom floor-to-ceiling wine columns can transform a luxury wine cellar into an architectural centerpiece—and how to choose between the Orford, Orford Dual, and Magog systems.
More Than a Wine Cellar. A Space Worth Experiencing.
Not long ago, wine cellars had one purpose: storing bottles safely until they were ready to be enjoyed.
Today, they've become architectural spaces designed to be seen, shared, and admired. Glass walls replace solid partitions, premium materials become part of the experience, and carefully planned lighting highlights every bottle, texture, and detail.
The wine itself becomes part of the décor.
As modern wine cellar design continues to evolve, traditional shelving is giving way to more refined architectural solutions. Floor-to-ceiling wine columns create the impression that bottles are floating within the space while preserving openness, light, and visibility.
At The Rack Co., this vision inspired us to create three handcrafted modular wine column systems, each designed for a different type of luxury wine cellar.
- Orford — a minimalist front-facing column ideal for wine cellars built against a wall or enclosed spaces.
- Orford Dual — a dual-sided column offering greater bottle capacity with either label-forward or neck-first presentation.
- Magog — a statement column displaying bottles label-forward on both sides for maximum visual impact.
Although each system has its own personality, they all share the same philosophy:
Design the space first. Let the wine become the artwork.
This guide will help you understand why modular wine columns have become a preferred solution for luxury residential and commercial wine cellars—and which system best fits your project.

Why Choose Wine Columns?
Modern wine cellars are no longer designed simply to store bottles. They're designed around the space itself.
Unlike traditional wall-mounted wine racks, wine columns create elegant vertical displays while allowing surrounding materials to remain part of the design. Natural stone, reclaimed wood, architectural concrete, custom millwork—or even an exposed rock wall—can remain fully visible instead of disappearing behind rows of bottles.
One of our favourite projects featured wine columns installed in front of a natural rock formation discovered in a client's basement. Rather than hiding it, the columns have turned it into one of the cellar's defining design features.
Because Orford, Orford Dual, and Magog columns can be installed floor-to-ceiling or floor-to-wall, they're also an ideal solution when wall attachment is limited or when the backdrop itself deserves to remain untouched.
The result is a lighter, more refined wine cellar where the wine, the architecture, and the surrounding materials work together beautifully.
Our wine columns are ideal for :
✔ Luxury residential wine cellars
✔ 360 glass-enclosed wine rooms
✔ New home construction and renovations
✔ Restaurant and hospitality projects
✔ Wine displays integrated into living spaces
✔ Projects featuring natural stone, wood, concrete, or other architectural backdrops
If your goal is to create a wine cellar that's as beautiful as the collection it holds, a modular wine column may be the perfect solution.

Which Wine Column Is Right for You?
Every wine cellar has its own personality.
Some are designed to showcase exceptional materials. Others prioritize storage capacity or become the focal point of a custom home. That's why we created three distinct systems. While they share the same premium materials, modular construction, and customization options, each was designed with a different architectural vision in mind. Every system can be tailored to your project, with customizable heights, layouts, bottle holder styles, finishes, and bottle presentation options.
Orford: Refined Simplicity
The Orford Column is the purest expression of architectural wine storage.
Designed to showcase bottles from the front, it's ideal for wine cellars built against a wall or enclosed spaces where the rear of the installation remains hidden. Its minimalist profile allows beautiful materials like natural stone, wood, concrete, or custom millwork and niches to remain part of the design instead of being concealed.
Elegant, understated, and fully customizable, the Orford is perfect for homeowners, designers, and builders looking to create a timeless high-end wine feature.
Magog: When the Wine Becomes the Architecture
The Magog Column was designed for wine lovers who want their collection to become the focal point of the room.
Displaying bottles label-forward on both sides of a single column, it creates a striking architectural display that can be appreciated from every angle. A single column makes a spectacular statement piece, while multiple columns create dramatic wine walls with fewer structural elements than traditional layouts.
If your dream wine cellar is designed to impress, the Magog was built for exactly that.
Orford Dual: More Capacity, More Possibilities
The Orford Dual combines the elegant lines of the Orford with significantly greater bottle capacity.
Designed to display bottles on both the front and back of the column, it can be configured in two distinct ways: label-forward to showcase every bottle or neck-first for a cleaner, more minimalist aesthetic. This flexibility allows the system to adapt to different viewing angles, cellar layouts, and design styles.
Ideal for larger residential and commercial projects, the Orford Dual maximizes storage while maintaining a refined architectural presence.
Handcrafted for One Home at a Time

Exceptional wine cellars are never one-size-fits-all. While our standard wall mounted wine rack collections are designed to fit a wide variety of homes and wine cellars, every Orford, Orford Dual, and Magog Column begins with a specific project—and a specific vision.
Each column is made to order around your dimensions, layout, and the way you collect wine. Whether you choose single, double, or Magnum bottle holders, a linear or staggered layout, a custom colour, or even a custom height, every column is configured specifically for your project before fabrication begins.
From the very beginning, everything happens close to home. Steel components and adjustable fixtures are manufactured by trusted local partners before returning to our workshop, where every column is individually drilled, every bottle holder is hand-finished, and every component receives a durable powder-coated finish.
Each order is then carefully inspected, packaged, and prepared for shipment with all required assembly hardware for straightforward on-site installation.
Perhaps what makes us most proud is this:
Every Orford, Orford Dual, and Magog Column is designed and manufactured within a 5-kilometre radius of our workshop in Sherbrooke, Québec.
It's craftsmanship we're proud to share—and even prouder to ship across Canada, one wine cellar at a time.
A Little Piece of the Eastern Townships

Every product has a name.
We wanted ours to have a story.
The very first Orford Column wasn't created for a showroom—it was designed for a wonderful young couple building their dream wine cellar in Orford, Québec. As the project came to life, so did the name.
Not long after, another custom wine cellar inspired a new design. This time, the project was for another lovely couple in the charming lakeside town of Magog. Once again, the place became inseparable from the product itself.
Today, every Orford and Magog Column carries a small piece of that story.
Designed in Saint-Denis-de-Brompton and handcrafted in Sherbrooke, these modular wine cellar systems are inspired by the craftsmanship, landscapes, and way of life that make Québec's Eastern Townships such a special place to call home.
Every column is built for a different homeowner, but they all share the same roots.
And every time one leaves our workshop, we like to think we're sending a little piece of the Eastern Townships somewhere new.
Perhaps your wine cellar will be the next chapter in that story.
